Shoplifting and its effect on a Swedish residence permit

If someone having Swedish Residence Permit is involved in shoplifting for 305 SEK, and leaves Sweden for a month. Can the person be stopped for entering back to Sweden by the immigration because he has been involved in crime of shoplifting even his permit is valid? Will it be problem for him to get his visa extended?

Hi

Thank you for your question!

He can lose his residence permit if he has moved from Sweden or lied when applying for a residence permit. He can also lose the permit if he has been convicted of acrime in Sweden. In the same conviction the judge can also decide to revoke his residence permit. Revoking residence permit can only happen if the crime can lead to prison for one year or if the person have committed several small crimes. This is the common guideline according to the public prosecutors office. Shoplifting usually only leads to a fine, and not a prison sentence. He probably won't have his residence permit revoked due to the fact that shoplifting is a minor offence. However, regarding your second question, this might play a part in a future application.

Hope you received the help you needed!
